I have been a Registered Nurse for 50 years, and have enjoyed a wide range of experiences in the nursing profession as well as in my education.
After graduation, and being able to write "RN" after my name, I started as a "wet behind the ears" nurse In North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY. I rotated through all 3 shifts on a Med/Surg floor.
The hospital was much smaller then and ICU beds were limited. Patients were moved out to my floor sooner then you might expect. Being the only nurse on at night and receiving critically ill patients, I grew up quickly in my nursing career.
I also worked in Hillside Psychiatric Hospital where I saw how the mind can be in pain. I loved talking to the patients and helping them to know that they were cared about, understood and accepted.
Working for a sage doctor as his office nurse gave me the opportunity to learn so many things. He loved to teach me and I loved to learn. Taking EKGs, phlebotomy and developing X-rays were added to my resume of experiences that I might never have had without Dr. M!
The list goes on but I really found my calling in long term care. I worked my way up from a Head Nurse on a dementia floor, to a Rehab Nurse in a 500+ bed nursing home, to Staff Development, QA, Safety Officer, Infection Control Coordinator, and eventually the Director of Nursing in several Long Island nursing homes. I was often being recruited to upgrade the nursing departments.
Folks in the geriatric population are sooooo special. Behind those weakening eyes and failing ears is a lifetime of LIFE!
They have been through good times and bad, pain and joys that are still deep inside. I consider it a gift to sit with with an older person to tap into his or her world of memories and wisdom.
Each time I took on a new job I loved it even more than the one before. Could there ever be anything I'd like more????
Then it happened. I was asked to research, design, create and then be the director of a medical model Adult Day Health Services. This soon became my most loved job yet.
That is, until now.
On June 30, 2009, I closed the door behind me at my beloved Maria Regina Residence Adult Day Program for the last time.
It was not easy but I felt God leading me to even another adventure!
He has been guiding me on a journey for my own improved health through a natural holistic approach and has given me a passion to share it with others.
I became a Holistic Wellness Consultant and a Certified Integrative Aromatherapist.
I had learned, first hand, about the healing forces within God's plants and knew that the essential oils from these plants must play a key role in my care for my clients in the form of Aromatherapy.
I became a Certified Integrative Aromatherapist. I was thrilled to find the Institute of Integrative Aromatherapy because they share my love for treating the whole person.
Then, as an added blessing, I was offered a part time position in Queen of Peace Residence as the Staff Development Coordinator.
I love to teach and I love hands on work with the residents. This position gives me both and I can still enjoy working with my clients in my Holistic Wellness practice.
In line with my love for teaching I have created other websites which share health information as well as various other things.
Another way I enjoy continuing to teach is through my Speaking Engagements.
I invite you to contact me. We could share thoughts.
